Same problem here. I had meddled with ALSA and PulseAudio settings, since upgrading to Hardy, while trying to make audio capture work. I was unsuccessful, and may have broken Rhythmbox somehow. I have also messed with codecs and the medibuntu repo since then, trying to fix DVD playback, which was successful, but also may have broken Rhythmbox. I found that the sound card/drivers did not install properly.
