I am sure this will be fixed soon in 8.10 but in the meantime the latest wireless package http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download solved the problem for me. I have same chipset on Acer Laptop and this has been an issue since Gutsy Gibbon, continues with Hardy but up until 2.6.24-19 kernal the Madwifi driver could be installed and all would be a source of joy. Since upgrading to 2.6.24-21 kernal the madwifi install causes a kernal panic if it is installed . Have also tried the Intrepid Alpha's and Beta and still no joy, I hope this bug is fixed soon as there is now no Madwifi option to allow an upgrade path.
