2013-08-21 Thread Mattia Rizzolo
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the
bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It
would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu
version (like precise and above). When you test it and it is still an
issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running `apport-collect 302693`
and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

2010-10-19 Thread Pete Ashdown
I see this problem too, but it isn't cured by a restart. Package files
are somehow getting corrupted by acng, and this on two separate
installations. I have to go in and clear out the old files from the
cache to fix it.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2010-03-04 Thread Daniel Hahler
I've experienced this kind of problem (or similar) on Lucid with 0.4.3 (and
maybe before):
1. sometimes apt-get update fails with connection refused
2. sometimes after downloading packages they appear to be missing completely
(or are corrupted) (bug 523395 for the result of this - may not be acng related
at all)

I've got not much details (maybe logs?), since it's easily fixed by
restarting apt-cacher-ng.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2009-10-27 Thread Eduard Bloch
Relax, you seem to assume that I am offended but I don't really care. We
(in Debian) have been living for a long time with this conflict between
long-time-freeze ideology and the need for fixes which came only with
incompatible changes. But after all, every user of an LTS distro should
realize that the stability (of the code base) comes with some price,
i.e. sometimes that means keeping known bugs frozen in the frozen code.
If you don't like it, don't use LTS, and don't blame maintainers in any
case.

That said, I personally would consider updating acng in older
distributions. I am not aware of any obstacles in the upgrade path,
there were no radical configuration changes or similar bad things.

Btw, I plan to release 0.4.1 in November which contains minor code
improvements, simpler debconf dialog and debconf template translations.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2009-10-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I think Poppafuzze wasn't commenting on this bug. His rant and his
incorrect claims certainly have no relation to what's been discussed
here. In general, I think it's advisable to actually understand before
ranting and risking to look stupid. The only thing I could make out
from his incorrect deductions and claims was that he is somehow unhappy
about Ubuntu and the way packages are handled. If that's the case and
he prefers the way Debian does thing, then I think the solution to his
problem should be obvious.

People who come from a Debian background apparently frequently fail to
understand that Ubuntu has no concept of dedicated Maintainers. Any
analysis based on this assumption is flawed from the beginning. And
there just is no way around the Ubuntu release process as outlined
above. Just accept it, always run the latest release or switch distro,
those are your only three options, I'd say.

Enough off-topic. Guillermo, are you already running Karmic (maybe you
can try out a live CD or live USB?) and is the problem still present
there?

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2009-10-26 Thread Poppafuze
Could you Ubuntu folks please stop attacking upstream with a threat to
pull a package? That is just assy behavior.

Upstream pointed out a flaw in the selection/release/update workflow
that is used to prevent a fix from becoming manifest. It was good
advice from upstream, for free, based on their intimate familiarity with
the code, and they don't deserve to be treated that way. They don't
have to do anything for Ubuntu, especially for some guilt-tripping
threat about ruining some perceived fame by being included in a distro.

1. Asking upstream to go into the past and bake out a special patch
just for Ubuntu by some hint about finding a patch is just rude. This
is an Ubuntu maintainer's job if a newer version is known to work. And
BTW, that makes Ubuntu a test pilot for some wierdo patch that wasn't
necessary in the first place.

2. Citing Ubuntu's tight release process for witholding a fix, and then
noting that the package is in universe (which is not supported by
Ubuntu) is contradictory.

3. I don't think is not an answer about admittability of a patch.
The patch was rejected by the people who decide has actual backbone.

4. And since when does the size of the patch matter if a problem is
fixed? Really, some projects will go through a refactor, and there is
simply no way to get a small patch for situations like that. Ubuntu
does not get to choose when they get this free windfall from upstream.

5. And upstream called Ubuntu out for grabbing some bizarro version and
locking it into a stable release, when it's not. Ubuntu is famous for
this.

This thread is making Ubuntu maintainers sound like a bunch of sysadmins
instead of software developers. And the description of the release
cycles implies that using a non-LTS version implies greater stability
for all those packages that are not in main.

And BTW, I have the problem, too, over a year since 250974 was opened.
I have the 0.1.9-1 version, because it's not in main, universe,
multiverse, updates, or backports.

2009-02-16 Thread Brian Pitts
I'm experiencing the same problem. acng would still be running but it
would not respond to any requests. I upgraded to the version in Rolf's
PPA and will report if this doesn't solve the problem.

Placing the following in /etc/apt/preferences seemed to keep anything
besides acng from being updated.

Package: apt-cacher-ng
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-r0lf
Pin-Priority: 600

Package: *
Pin: release o=LP-PPA-r0lf
Pin-Priority: 0

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2008-11-28 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Just as a general warning to the public: It is generally not advisable
and will lead to all kinds of strange problem when installing debian
binary packages directly into a Ubuntu system.

The much preferred route is to take the debian sources and recompile
them for the target release. This is trivial with a PPA. I defer
interested parties to
https://answers.launchpad.net/soyuz/+question/51583.

actually, I removed the jaunty version after recompiling them. Please
try the 0.2.2 release from https://launchpad.net/%7Er0lf/+archive/ which
is what I have been using successfully for several months now. It is
better to be minimal in the changes we make, we may eventually be able
to come up with a patch for an SRU.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2008-11-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Eduard, thank you for the quick response.

0.3.3 (or a later version) should go into jaunty, no doubt. For the
stable releases hardy and intrepid, we only have two options and
updating to 0.3.3 is not one of them.

a) find a minimal patch to fix the problem
b) ask everybody to install 3rd-party binaries for apt-cacher-ng (such as the
ones I provide in my PPA)

If at all possible, I'd like to avoid b). You've already pointed out
the changelog possibly dealing with this exact problem. If we now can
come up with a minimal patch for this fix and this fix only, we have a
chance to get an SRU exception and continue to support users inside the
ubuntu framework (SRU: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates)

If you can help me find the code that needs to be changed, I'm willing
to do the rest.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2008-11-27 Thread Eduard Bloch
I don't think that cherry picking is a good idea here. That issue is not
some missing bounds or null pointer check (or similar obvious bug),
instead we have a nebulous problem here.

For the fix between 0.2.1 and 0.2.2 (the Debian frozen version) I can
provide a patch which might help and which is restricted to the changes
in core (see attachment).

But for 0.1.9, that's too different. Sorry guys, I cannot help you if
you took a bloody EARLY version from Debian UNSTABLE and have put an LTS
sticker on it. That's just your own design flaw in the release process
and I have no motivation in helping to work around that.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2008-11-27 Thread Eduard Bloch
This might be one of the ghost problems with file storage code, see
0.2.2 changelog:

  * Fix: incorrect creation of sparse files in few (unusual) conditions; also
made data/header file opening sequences more safe and reliable and
added/improved some limited recovery methods
  * better logging of important cache storage errors

However I recommend to be less conservative and go for version 0.3.3.

Yes, it has changed lots of code since 0.2.2 but most of that on the
maitnenance part and not on the core. And that part had a lot of
internal flaws that needed to be fixed/replaced. It also got
functionality to clean up the mess caused by pre-0.2.2 versions on some
systems.

[Bug 302693] Re: apt-cacher-ng hangs and corrupts packages (intrepid)

2008-11-27 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Thank you for the patch. I don't think there is any chance of getting a
144KB patch in.

I think there is some misunderstanding about LTS and the ubuntu release
process. acng is in universe where packages are merged automatically.
The LTS sticker only applies to the distro as a whole and particularly
to the packages in main, not to apt-cacher-ng in particular. If we
cannot come up with a minimal patch, then essentially acng will become a
dead, unusable package in intrepid and hardy. This is not unlike debian
stable, where I have witnessed this happening a lot of times (and even
when an easy fix was easily available).

We may even consider a request to remove acng from the official hardy
and intrepid repos.
