- grub -- white Ubuntu logo -- black screen with no backlight
- grub -- white Ubuntu logo -- the desktop shows for 5 seconds -- black
screen with backlight

I get the third possibility (grub - blackscreen) with an Xpress 1250.
Not sure how to try nonmodeset
