I have the same problem after an upgrade from Natty yesterday (10 oct).
So i can start oneiric only with the kernel 2.6.38.
I don't have any /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic file present too.

Tried sudo dpkg --configure -a, it gives exactly the same error as with
when installing updates through the update manager, or even installing
