Mounting the /var/lib/AccountsService directory through nfs from an
external server might help get around this issue. I will see if this
works.

I can confirm this bug for precise with nfs+ldap+kerberos.
The default session for users isn't saved in either lightdm or gdm, as both use
accountsservice for session saving.

Still seeing this issue. Ubuntu 11.10 fully updated.
LDAP users login and it ignores desktop selection. Still doesn't work after
logging out and back in. The users always get the Unity desktop. Hope this is
fixed soon.

I don't completely understand why, but using Cedric's backport PPA in
bug #873784 to get correct handling of the wtmp file also resolved the
issue with the session selection for me. Worth a try for those who are
affected by this bug.
