Upstream bug was closed as a duplicate of 680953 which
was itself closed "RESOLVED FIXED" on 2013-08-26
Reporter did not reply to comment #4 but I have checked
with evince 3.28.4 and Ubuntu 18.04 and have found that
the side pane can now be set to around 130px or the size
of a thumbnail. Closing
The fix for the Gnome bug mentioned in comment #3 is available in Ubuntu
13.10 Saucy Salamander with evince 3.8.2-0ubuntu4. Can you test and
see if it fixes your issue?

in Evince 3.7.1. At the moment the upcoming Ubuntu 13.04 Raring
Ringtail is still using evince 3.6.1-1ubuntu1.
