[Bug 102240] Re: eclipse crashed while I was trying to install a few addons through their updater.

2007-06-23 Thread Erik Leif Anderson
Sorry about the long delay. Here are some things that have become more
obvious since the original incident:

1. The machine I was using seems to have a hardware problem that causes
it to freeze. I don't believe that has anything to do with Ubuntu. The
problem appeared around the same time as this bug, so hopefully, the
actual crash was caused by that.

2. There is a problem loading Eclipse packages from within Eclipse
because they try to write to directories that require root access.
Therefore, you would indeed have to launch Eclipse with sudo, as Josir
recommended. However, I would prefer not to run something as sudo
unless I have to, especially when writing code. I know what kind of
damage I am capable of doing!

3. I am currently downloading Eclipse (non-repository) for my new
machine, which is running much better than the old one. I still have
the other one available, but due to the fact that there seems to be a
hardware issue, I think that it is unfair to Ubuntu to use it to work
off bugs. BTW, my new machine is dual-boot Feisty/Vista and running
beautifully, though I can't speak much for the Vista side because I
rarely use it.

Cheers,
Erik

2007-05-06 Thread Josir Cardoso Gomes
1) I imagine (from your log) that you install Eclipse/JDK from the
repository.

On that way, you must install Eclipse Updates as a root user. Did you
run the Install/Update as a Eclipse 'sudo' user ?

2) I have encountered several problems working on repository-based Eclipse.
Using only the repository, I can't even create a JSP project.

Could you do the same test with a downloaded version of Eclipse and the
Sun JDK ?

- Removing completely the gcj
- Installing the Sun JDK
- Installing the Eclipse from eclipse.org

I am doing the same process on my Edgy box.

2007-05-06 Thread Erik Leif Anderson
Thank you. I will hopefully try those tomorrow. There is definitely a
problem with privileges and I did use the repository version. I think
my speculation that the screen saver was involved is way off. I'll let
you know about any results I have,
Thanks again,
Erik Anderson
