Even though this tickit seems to be expired, I'd like to add the following. I've been having the same problem in 12.04. I followed the guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo and came up with a complaing nfs service saying that rpc.statd is not running. I fixed the problem

Hi Yannick, I don't understand how you could be getting the errors you are on a clean Ubuntu system. What does 'status portmap' show on this system? You should never need to start rpcbind manually from the commandline, the /etc/init/portmap.conf upstart job should already be doing this for you.
