Closing as I don't have access to this laptop, the Ubuntu release is EOL
and support for the hardware is probably EOL as well.

Unfortunately, sudo modprobe samsung-laptop doesn't do anything on
either the mainline kernel or the current 3.2.0-27.43-generic 3.2.21
kernel.
