i still get the issue... [Toshiba U200, intel gma 945, kubuntu gutsy up-to-date] I get the issue (dark screen with grey squares) on my kubuntu gutsy (new install), as i did in feisty. And I get more often this issue than in feisty (see last paragraph for explanation...) ! Notice that one time I got the same issue with ctrl-alt-bksp trying to restart my X server. I agree that in feisty, i disabled splash (removing splash from grub) and it worked better, but the issue happened from time to time anyways. This seems to be a general problem, as it also affects Gnome version. I've got it on one of my laptops, but not the other. The inconsistency is likely part of the reason a fix is slow in coming. On gnome version nosplash did not fix the shutdown. With my P4P800 I could not shut down in Edgy or Fiesty (would hang at the end). It turns out that an option for apm had been disabled. This happens to me, too. I've seen it on a variety of machines with several different kinds of nvidia and intel graphics cards, and if I recall correctly, it's been happening since at least Edgy. I used to blame it on nvidia's proprietary drivers, but I now know that they aren't the culprit. I don't think I've ever had it happen with plain Ubuntu, but it does happen if I install the Ubuntu usplash theme in Kubuntu. The alternate packages don't seem to make a difference. Restarting from KDM on my Thinkpad results in text, while restarting from KDE results in a blank or corrupted screen that changes to the proper splash screen right at the end. On a desktop with an Intel 810 graphics chipset, it generally works with KDM, fails with KDE. On my desktop (nvidia geforce 7600), it often locks up completely, but it will sometimes function properly. When i installed 7.04 for the first time i upgraded the whole system. While installing the package with (kpackage) i got a notification that i was degrading from kdm 3.5.6-20.1 to Kdm 3.5.6-20 and that caused an dependency failure. that was all the information i got from Kpackage. I also have a dpendency problem. dpkg says this: kdm depends on kdebase-bin (= 4:3.5.6-0ubuntu20usplash1); however: Version of kdebase-bin on system is 4:3.5.6-0ubuntu20.1. Goodevening, Because the KDM package didn't work for me right now i removed splash from the /boot/grub/menu.lst and did a updat-grub. This works fine but only one time . The next time i logged in a noticed that the grub/menu.lst had restored itself. Nowadays maybe even 95% of the cases monitor looses input signal and goes to sleep, computer completely stuck, have to switch off manually by pressing power key for 7 seconds. I'm suspecting this is to blame for that I even had to already re-install Feisty once (FS went completely mad). When I shutdown or restart from KDE menu ,can occurs (launching a coin): HEADS- blank screen, (shutting down log on text term, CRTL+ALT+F1), KUBUNTU splash with progress bar appears for 0.2 secs and works (restart or shutdown). After that, monitor turns off (when shutting down). All ok. TAILS- blank for 1.5 secs, monitor turns off and no response from machine, neither by pressing power off button, CRTL+ALT+DEL, change text term, playing piano on my keyb... anything does nothing. Same issue here (in Gnome) on a Gateway M3708 laptop. Laptop has an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M video card. In Gnome, going to System-Logout with result in a blank screen and a system hard lock. However, this ONLY happens with the proprietary ATI drivers. My problem was similar to those here: shutdown from kdm works, shutdown from within a KDE session does not (freezing on Kubuntu splash screen). I can also confirm that removing usplash (or probably disabling it) is an easy and basically painless workaround. I also have a very similar problem. The problem exists in a Fujitsu- Siemens Amilo Pi1505 notebook, with Feisty, and also in a computer with Edgy and Feisty. If I log out, and choose Shutdown from the kdm menu, it works well, but if I try to shutdown from KDE (Log out... -- Turn off), the notebook's screen is flashing, or there is some graphical garbage, the other computer's screen is turn off. The computers aren't answer anything, except if I push the power button (for about 5 seconds). I face similar problem of shutdown not completing. My original install is Edgy upgraded to Feisty. Then I installed kubuntu-desktop and in the process selected kdm as the desktop manager. I had no problems with Edgy or in Feisty while using gdm. After installing kubuntu-desktop, the problem started while shutting down. When I click on the shutdown button from the panel, the desktop closes and I often get a blank dark screen. This occurs 80% of the time I shutdown. Sometimes, I get a pale white screen or some colors moving on th screen like a screen saver instead of the blank screen. But, the processor LED glows for sometime and hangs down. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL restarts the system, while pressing the power button shuts down. And in the remaining 20% of the shutdowns, I do not get a complete kubuntu-usplash during shutdown, it appears only for the last 10% or so before the system powers off. I have tried changing the usplash from kubuntu to ubuntu, but still the problem continues. Maarten, could you try to also install the gdm package; it will ask you what you want as your default dm, so choose kdm. I remember I installed that package as well on my fresh Dell Inspiron system and I added the changes above. Same bug here running Kubuntu Feisty 7.04 on HP DV5097 (amd64) and on a Dell Inspiron (pentium4) something. I can confirm this on Kubuntu 7.04. My guess is that there might be some processes blocking the shutdown: If I have a fresh login, KDE shutdown mostly works. If I enter sudo shutdown now into the terminal the PC shuts down instantly. Maybe the KDE shutdown buttons need to be a little more aggressive. Hi Alexander Glad that I am not alone with this, I got no reaction at all up till now (also not on posts on the feisty forum) Like I said the problem does not occur when I boot with nosplash (it is allright for me, I like looking at the system messages). Like you, I can leave the X-session with e.g. CTRL-ALT-F1, then shutdown manually. When I logout manually from a console window in the graphical environment, it also works, and I I even get a logout splash screen. I guess that the problem is caused somehow by graphically logging out from X, where the switch is made to the splashscreen logout process. In other words, the problem seems to be caused by something that was added by the Kubuntu developers. I have to add that also selecting end session / log off user from kde does not work. So the problem occurs when I try to exit the X session in the normal manner, from the graphical environment.
