This has been fixed in LibreOffice 4.0 in Raring. I tested this on LibreOffice 3.5.7.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build:2), Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with a HP AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 840T Processor × 4, using 32 bit. I was able to open a 50,000 row xlsx spreadsheet in about 30 seconds. I opened a ~420,000 row csv spreadsheet in a couple minutes (I got exceed maximum row length warning.
