No, it is fine now. You might be able to get any more hints about what
happens if you kill it and start it from the command line and see if it
outputs something before it crashes.

Thanks for the hint. Here's what the terminal says upon nm-applet
running and then crashing a few hours later.
$ nm-applet
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area
** Message: PID 14679 (we are 10421) sent signal 15, shutting down...
