Could I suggest that you add some configuration setting somewhere since
I agree with teh privacy issue, but also think this is useful for folks
who don't mind having some notifications? Just a thought to make it
easier for some folks that may not remember to make the suggestion you

but it seems it's not working for Banshee for me, is that supposed to be like
that right now? I don't mind switching to rhythmbox if so.

yeh, I believe its just rhythmbox for now. They are planning to add
MPRIS support at some stage (probably in 3.8) though, so then it should
work with most music apps.

Enabling of lock screen notifications requires gnome-control-center 3.6,
which is not shipped with quantal.
You should however be able to manually enable lock-screen notifications
with gsettings with the following command (or use dconf-editor):
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.screensaver
