Ah that one I was thinking of is registered with the Squid team as #1900 http://www.squid-cache.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=1900 That would account for an extra long shutdown resulting in failed then being forcibly killed. If this is the bug I'm thinking of it has been fixed upstream for a while now since 2.6-s12 and 3.0-p7 at least.
