Raymond, I followed the advice given here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1158033#p1158033 to wit, add blacklist i82975x_edac to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf It really did kill two birds with a stone: booting Ubuntu could take several minutes and the sound was disabled, now both problems are gone.
