Does a different driver (PPD) help? In Quantal (Not Precise - then it was fine...), printing a test page results in 'Idle - can't detect file type' in the Red Hat system-config-printers application, AKA 'Printing' (the default printing manager', and 'Filter failed' in View Attributes window.
