I have subsequently discarded the HP750 printer which itself developed another fault, and replaced it with HP printer M125nw which worked 'straight out of the box' My problem has now gone away. I'm not sure whether this problem is really with cups' apport hook, or apport itself, or what. It's not assigned to any package, and Im going to add both of those.
