How's the testing gone? KVM boxes can do funky things with the monitor
EDID.
However, so far if I had to guess, it's sounding like the hotplug logic
in gnome-settings-daemon isn't handling this case, since running xrandr
--auto works. Did you indicate if this is a regression from 12.10, or
did y
xrandr --auto works to solve the resolution problem. I will check the
KVM box a little later when I amin front of the machine.

Is this a regression from 12.10? The modesetting code in the kernel got
rewritten for 3.7, so testing with 3.5 from quantal might make it work.
Also, try without the KVM box to see if it makes a difference.
