This laptop is only a couple of months old and has not run any previous
version of Kubuntu / Ubuntu. This bug also cannot be reproduced on
anything less than the lts-quantal 3.5.0 kernel for precise because of
bug #1088829 (USB devices not detected in USB 3.0 ports). This buug

This sporadic failure exists in v3.8-rc4 mainline kernel.
Easiest way to force this failure is to login as soon as the login
screen appears.
Leaving the login screen for a period of time then logging in, seems to
cause less failures for some reason.
