Here are the instructions to solve this:
1. Add the notifications key to your schema:
sudo gedit
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/org.gnome.desktop.screensaver.gschema.xml
And add a new key:
key type=b name=show-notifications
defaulttrue/default
summarydummy summary/summary

- dpkg -l | grep gsettings-desktop-schemas
- locate org.gnome.desktop.screensaver
- dpkg -S org.gnome.desktop.screensaver

That unveiled the issue, I had installed ricotz's ppa a while back and
removed it after a few days but apparently the ppa was not completely
purged. I added it again and purged it again and the package was
properly downgraded and the missing key was added to the schema. Feel
very noobish!
