Dell XPS M1530 Ubuntu 12.04.2 fresh install Low mic volume STAC9228 This problem was fixed in the 2.6 kernel used in 8.04 and 10.04. Dell had recommended installing the backport kernel modules and that fixed the problem in 8.04. Ubuntu 10.04 had the fix in place and no backported modules were necessary. Now, the 3.5 kernel doesn't include the same volume boost fix. My XPS M1330 uses the same chipset and has the same problem. I have all mic levels raised to maximum but the internal mic barely registers any input. It's too quiet to be usable. In previous releases of Ubuntu there was a mic boost option in the ALSA mixer, but there isn't anymore.
