I can confirm that with the new package gtk2-engines-
oxygen_1.3.3-2ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb EasyTag is starting correctly (I'm not
using Emacs but EasyTag had the exact same problem)

The update of gtk2-engines-oxygen has no effect on emacs24, as it's
compiled against GTK3. I've just checked, and indeed installing it
doesn't make the problem go away, at least for me.

Seems rather serious to me. Currently there are at least three packages
in the ubuntu repos (oxygen-gtk for gtk2 and gtk3 and qtcurve) that -
once installed - may make many gtk applications stop working, in such a
way that they silently hang.
A troublesome aspect is thatI would like to report
