Public bug reported: I recently upgraded my Athlon64 motherboard to 4Gb of ram and the system locked some seconds after the login screen. After a bit of research I discovered that the culprit is powernowd, and uninstalling it solved the problem. I'm still using the 32bit version of kubuntu (planning to migrate to 64bit with next release, if a 64 java plugin shows up).
