I had the same problem the other day.
After few hours and few re-install I added xorg.conf file to /etc/X11 (I think
it was there) and changed two lines too:
Driver nvidia
VendorName NVIDIA
and rebooted. Now the additional drivers works and I could pick drivers
I wanted.

Ah, there we go. Ubuntu currently doesn't support these hybrid systems
out of the box (there are ways to get it working with some tinkering).
