I am running Ubuntu 13.04 with the Gnome 3 shell. I encounter the same issue. Gateway NV50A16u laptop. AMD Phenom II X2 N660 processor. ATI Mobility Radeon HD41520 Graphics. If I disable empathy I have no issues running Ubuntu 13.04 with Gnome. Facebook is the only account linked to Gnome. Problem exits in that the activity search, searches Facebook contacts and seems to be the cause of the system lag in my opinion.
