my laptop won't even turn it's screen back on after most hibernations. I
have to force it to shut down (but when I turn it back on it appears
fine). my laptop is samsung NP900X4D.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.10 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following

If the mainline kernel does not fix
Unfortunately, still no hibernation mode with latest upstream kernel.
Same behaviour as with Kernel version 3.8.
