[Bug 1263415] Re: Kyocera FS-1100D cannot print Google Maps - limitcheck --image--

2014-01-13 Thread kniffte
Hello,

alright, I already contacted Kyocera support. They're basically saying that the
Postscript file seems to be incorrect (an object, the image object) is not part
of the document or at the wrong position. From their point of view it seems to
an error by the software creating the Postscript or during data transfer.
They're recommending to print the job as a pre-rendered image. Alternatively,
it is possible to reinstall the PPD (I' ve done that already).

I'm not sure, if you can read German, but I will attach the mail. Note:
I've anonymized the mail.

Part of my original request to Kyocera was a link to this bug report,
stating that all files e.g. the Postscript file is attached to this bug.
But I cannot say, whether they actually took a look at these files.

Here's the mail:

FROM: ans...@dde.kyocera.com
SUBJECT: (Call #YYY) Re: FS-1100: KYOCERA Document Solutions Support Anfrage
Sehr geehrter Herr XXX,

Aktuelle PPD Dateien
finden Sie im Downloadcenter:

I will try to capture the PS created by Firefox and Chrome tonight.
Maybe we can compare it somehow, since the printer eats both PS (but not
the Opera one).

[Bug 1263415] Re: Kyocera FS-1100D cannot print Google Maps - limitcheck --image--

2014-01-13 Thread cliddell
Sorry, I haven't spoken, read or written German since I was at school!
But Google translate did a good enough job to get the idea of what they
said and, frankly, I strongly disagree with what they say.

What they have written implies that they have not actually analysed the
Postscript you have sent, they have simply looked at the error message,
and replied based on that.

Valid Postscript adheres to a standard (written and published by Adobe),
and whilst various companies have their own additional customisations,
the core language must adhere to the standard or it is not valid
Postscript.

I have access to six different Postscript implementations: Adobe
Distiller, Global Graphics Harlequin, Global Graphics JaWS, a Postscript
implementation also from Kyocera(!!), Ghostscript (of course!), and with
sufficient prior arrangement, Adobe CPSI.

All the above run your file to completion without errors or warnings
(including the Kyocera one).

In addition, I've looked fairly carefully at the Postscript myself, and
I see no problems with it.

Based on the above, the Opera Postscript output is valid, correct
Postscript, and the bug is with the printer.

FWIW, I am quite happy for you to quote me on that, or even to follow up
with Kyocera Germany on your behalf (assuming they can accept e-mails in
English!).

There is almost no point trying to compare the Postscript produced by
different applications - Postscript is a turing complete programming
language, as well as page description language, there are, therefore, an
almost infinite number of totally different ways a given page can be
represented. It's *highly* unlikely you (or anyone) will be able to
look at the two sets of output, and pin-point the cause of the problem.

The only way to narrow down the problem is, as I described before, for
someone like me to hand edit the Postscript, progressively cutting it
down, and possibly instrumenting it, so that you can try the each
iteration on your printer, until we reach the one thing (or set of
things) that causes the problem. It is a laborious process, that takes
time, paper and toner, but it really is the only option.

[Bug 1263415] Re: Kyocera FS-1100D cannot print Google Maps - limitcheck --image--

2014-01-12 Thread Till Kamppeter
Yes, it seems so.

Best is naturally that this gets reported to Opera and fixed there, or
better that Opera switches to PDF output which is already standard for
some years. So the Opera developers need to get informed.

We could do a workaround (not a fix!) though, detecting Opera's
PostScript output and in this case force a conversion of this PostScript
to PDF and after that back to PostScript to get a PostScript which the
printers actually print.

2014-01-12 Thread cliddell
If I am correct, and (like the cases we've hacked around with the Ghostscript
output) the Postscript is perfectly valid and correct,
you may find that the Opera developers aren't willing to change that perfectly
valid Postscript output to work around a bug in a printer.

Really this is very likely a Kyocera problem, not an Opera (nor a CUPS)
problem.

[Bug 1263415] Re: Kyocera FS-1100D cannot print Google Maps - limitcheck --image--

2013-12-29 Thread kniffte
I continued my checks and found some weird results. Basically, I tried two
things:
1. using Knoppix 7.0
2. printing the page as ps, converting it to pdf, printing it to the Kyocera

1. Using Knoppix, I wasn't able to open the .ps-file I provided w/ this bug. So
I opened the page again in Knoppix and printed it - it worked. So I returned to
Ubuntu, printed the file again as PDF (File - Print - Print to File (PDF)),
returned to Knoppix and printed it. It worked (that was different to Ubuntu,
where the PDF could not be printed).
However, printing the .ps file (the one provided w/ this bug report) directly
using lpr / lp lead to the same error (/limitcheck).

2. Following to my success printing the file using Knoppix, I manually
converted the .ps file to .pdf (using ps2pdf) - and I could successfully
print it using Ubuntu.

So it seems, that the ps2pdf application creates a different file which
can then be printed correctly. I will attach both files (as
ps2pdf.ps/pdf); the .ps file cannot be printed using Ubuntu, while the
.pdf file can

[Bug 1263415] Re: Kyocera FS-1100D cannot print Google Maps - limitcheck --image--

2013-12-29 Thread cliddell
Again, that all points to the bug being in the printer. The fact you can
convert the PS to PDF is a strong indication that the PS is correct (as
per the PS specification).

Don't forget that both PDF and PS are vector formats, so have nearly
infinite variations in how to produce (near) identical output. In
addition, PS is a Turing complete programming language, which adds
another almost infinite range of possibilities!

One thought springs to mind: does Opera allow you to change the Postscript
printing settings? For example, does it allow you to select Language Level 2
instead of Language Level 3? Doing that might avoid the problem area for the
printer.

If it's helpful, I could help to narrow down the exact cause of the error, that
might help a report to Kyocera, the Opera people produce a workaround, or maybe
even find a workaround in cups. But a) that will need help, patience and paper
from you (kniffte), and b) will have to wait until after the 6th Jan when I'm
actually back at my desk (officially, I'm currently on vacation).

Okay, that's what we need to see, thanks.

However, that Postscript comes from Opera, not from Ghostscript, so I'm
not really the upstream contact.

As far as I can tell, that's valid Postscript, so the problem is a bug
in the printer - it should really be reported to Kyocera.
