it's not reproducible for me with Xubuntu 14.04 amd64. Despite this,
could you please comment to what extensions you have installed (ex. any
ones downloaded from non-Ubuntu repository and added in)?

This is a vanilla install. Only the packages that came as part of the
default Ubuntu Gnome install from ISO of 2013-12-31. No extensions have
been installed or settings changes been made.

installed below, could you please bring it to package parity with mine
one-by-one, in between completely closing all LO instances, and reopening the
provided example file, and advise if still reproducible:
apt-show-versions

potential WORKAROUND, if you uninstall individually, or in combination the
following does it change anything:
libreoffice-gtk
libreoffice-gtk3

Re: #2. Removing the gtk package makes no difference and the error
remains.
Note that this error does not occur when opening MS .doc files.
