I had this whilst navigating away from a folder containing video media.
The video was in the process of being copied, so it's possible totem
tried to thumbnail an incomplete video file.

I recently experienced an issue with both Totem and VLC crashing (both
either when queuing up multiple videos in their respective interfaces or
disabling subtitles), which seems to be a result of gstreamer.
