No, I think this was fixed in recent versions of ALSA.

I've got the same problem on Ubuntu 8.04 different motherboard (ASUS
M2R32-MVP) but the same soundchip.

That's odd. I just updated my system to 8.04 and the problem has
disappeared. Everything now working perfectly.
