fwiw for package maintainers and as workaround for users, I did
sudo apt-get remove xdot
to remove the ubuntu-package-based xdot, an then
git clone https://github.com/jrfonseca/xdot.py
and then
sudo ln -s /usr/local/xdot/xdot.py/xdot.py /usr/local/bin/xdot
to make it accessible as just xdot
and now it works.

I wish ubuntu could prompt updates for my cloned git repos for me...
which is an off-topic...

cd /usr/local/
mkdir xdot
cd xdot

before the git clone.
