[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
Patch set 7 from upstream together with the skipped tests in Lorn's path plus two more skipped tests yielded a pass on unit tests. I copied this vrtm~5 to the 022 silo from the testing PPA. Current QA testing would imply the earlier Network Manager fix was a sufficient solution for now, so this Qt backend fix would not be rushed in anymore. The silo can be landed later to rtm, or to vivid targetting OTA update. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357321 Title: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/platform-api/+bug/1357321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm that the Saturday build with Lorn's newest patch, version ubuntu10~utopic1~test14, has the 3G connection staying alive. Unit tests in qtbase however started failing so the build was done with temporarily disabling those. My next build will be with the patch version 4 from upstream, and will be versioned ubuntu10~vrtm~1. [Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
Ok, I think I see the light now. This is an odd one. There seems to be two connection settings (within networkmanager) for the same connection context (even in mako), one being the nm settings configuration that is actually connected (settings/2), and the other that is not flagged as active (settings/0) (both with different UUID). It is this non-active configuration that SmartScopes is holding on to and trying to connect to, which then causes nm to disconnect the other configuration. I can work around this by faking that the Settings/0 is flagged as Active in QtBearer when there is a connection context somewhere with the same context id that is actually active.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
@Lorn: Did you have wifi turned on with a known network when you booted? I've seen the same that Pat saw: if you boot with wifi on, then turn wifi off, 3G stays on and doesn't have the reconnect cycle. However, if you boot so that wifi was disabled before starting the reboot, the 3G keeps reconnecting even if you enable wifi, disable it again etc. It becomes even more complicated (at least for me) if you try forgetting the known wifi networks (via wifi settings). My idea was to start with wifi powered on but no known network, to test how's the 3G in that case. I thought it was my mako or SIM card acting up earlier, but I've now noticed the pattern that I lose the SIM PIN dialog if I forget the old wifi networks, which means I can't test this case since I don't get GSM functionality. Does it work on krillin, forget the wifi networks and reboot? Yesterday I asked Antti (Wellark) to try to decipher what's happening, but I didn't hear from him yet whether he got results. He was working on dbus listening / log parsing to try to find out what's calling the reconnects.

Adding more eyes for network manager (cyphermox) and ofono (abeato). Could you try to reproduce the problem and try to see what's going in oFono / Network Manager when the disconnect/reconnect cycle happens, and whether there's something that could be fixed? To recap, if you use 3G only, images don't load in eg Video scope. If you add the rtm-022 PPA to your device and upgrade from there, images start to load but the 3G connection goes down and up all the time. The PPA includes an improved network-manager bearer backend for Qt to fix several issues like the problem related to scopes. [Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
@kgunn72 I think we certainly have moved on to a different bug. Originally, QNAM was not considering mobile data connection at all, because the QtBearer was only using generic plug (which does not know the difference between mobile data and other network interfaces and is not really usable anyway). The NetworkManager backend was also not working as it should. @mathieu-tl I just noticed in comment #10, you mention roaming (as does the bug subject). Roaming in QConfiguration means 'connection migration' where connections are migrated seamlessly to and from wlan/mobile (kind of like what mobile does moving from tower to tower), i.e. a streaming media would continue uninterrupted moving from wlan to mobile data. I believe it has been supported only on Symbian which did the connection migrations at the platform level . QNAM should now at least switch the configuration it uses when the default route changes to one that is usable, which is about the closest we can get to connection 'roaming' at this point. Previously a client would have to tear down and create a new QNAM. Now, a QNAM get request should succeed regardless when the QNAM was made.
[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
Attached ofonod log when this happens, from just before disconnect through the reconnect. I think the new bearer backend is exposing a bug elsewhere, as this happens even when there no QNetworkSession opened (which calls to activate whatever configuration). Whether it is in NetworkManager, ofonod, rild, or even elsewhere will take more digging and perhaps other eyes. _something_ is trying to activate the 3g context (not QtBearer), even if it is already activated (or appears to be from nm) which causes ofonod to deactivate it, which then gets re-activated by the autoconnect. ** Attachment added: ofonod log https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtbase-opensource-src/+bug/1357321/+attachment/4257000/+files/ofonod.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1357321 Title: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/platform-api/+bug/1357321/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
@kgunn: we have not yet landed anything to the archives since Lorn's patches are in the upstream 5.4 git, so yes it's still critical. Test results with the 5.3 ubuntu-rtm/landing-022 PPA (backported patches from Lorn's commits) would be welcome by anyone capable of testing it. I've added three more Lorn's patches today and the build has finished: * debian/patches/Make-QtBearer-networkmanager-backend-respond-to-wire.patch * debian/patches/Support-dual-sim-in-QtBearer-s-networkmanager-backen.patch * debian/patches/make-qtbearer-networkmanager-defaultConfiguration-mo.patch Anything that improves the situation and does not regress would be welcome to be landed to the archives early next week. I've found it a bit hard to test the scopes so that results would be consistent (before/after) and without Unity 8 crashes, but there are recent improvements to the crash situation now on the latest image. Saviq now mentioned that rm -rf ~/.cache/unity8-dash in-between would be a good idea, to remove cached images and such. My suggestion of testing: 1. 3G only, wifi disabled 2. 3G only, wifi enabled but no known access points 3. compare to wifi enabled and connected I've tested the 1. in a way that I --bootstrap flash the device, and then without ever connecting to wifi, connect to 3G network and upgrade to the PPA over 3G. As an addition, I have only mako so anyone with krillin would be very welcome to test. I have multiple problems on mako regarding testing the PPA: 1. Often no SIM dialog on boot, 2. With today's image, even after I get registered to 3G network, the data connection seems to disconnect and reconnect for 10s at a time. This is however _after_ adding the PPA, so it might be because of the latest patches in case Qt can affect such a thing. [Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
The 5.3.0+dfsg-2ubuntu10~utopic1~test7 in the PPA is with the networkmanager backend from 5.4 and the other patches. I'm not able to see music and video scopes contents with that on a freshly flashed (--bootstrap flash) mako that has never connected to wifi (PPA upgrade downloaded over 3G). Note that at this point wifi is enabled but it's not connected to any AP. After connecting wifi I can refresh to see content in the video and youtube scopes (although music stays empty). Rebooting, then disabling wifi did load content over 3G for the music scope too (others were probably cached), which I think is the first time. I can also browse the 7digital catalog and it loads the images (grooveshark images are broken regardless of Qt). This seems fairly hard to reproduce, since there are currently also Unity 8 crashers on the image I think better test cases than scopes do not load would be useful, scopes adds too big layer of other potential problems. Any ideas?
[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
I succeeded in rebasing the patch for 5.3.0, although with some level of uncertainty when doing that for example with QNetworkManagerEngine::deviceConnectionsChanged not existing in 5.3.0. It applies now and seems to build also successfully, although as of now the armhf build is still ongoing (at https://launchpad.net/~ci-train- ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-rtm/landing-022). When armhf has finished, it'd be worth testing. lp:~kubuntu-packagers /kubuntu-packaging/qtbase-opensource-src_530_networkmanagerfixes is updated with the rebase.
[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu
To replicate my rebasing environment see http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/8819119/. I originally did quilt push -f on the last patch and then manually fixed the codebase until I had gone through all the rejected parts.
