[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-18 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Patch set 7 from upstream together with the skipped tests in Lorn's path
plus two more skipped tests yielded a pass on unit tests. I copied this
vrtm~5 to the 022 silo from the testing PPA.

Current QA testing would imply the earlier Network Manager fix was a
sufficient solution for now, so this Qt backend fix would not be rushed
in anymore. The silo can be landed later to rtm, or to vivid targetting
OTA update.

rtm-022 is again ready to test with the latest patch revision and the
package versions ending in ~vrtm~2. I'll use a separate silo for further
test builds but 022 is the one to test.

As discussed, I suppose we should have QA starting testing of the

still being fixed, but wait with the release until we have a clear

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-17 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Upstream patch set 6 improves tests again (fail instead of crash) but no
full pass: https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-
rtm/landing-009/+sourcepub/4574822/+listing-archive-extra (FAIL! :
tst_QNetworkConfiguration::comparison() 'configs.count()' returned

Patch set 6 is now uploaded to rtm-022 with tests disabled again as
ubuntu10~vrtm~4, armhf build can be upgraded to in around 3.5h or a
little less.

== PPA to be tested ==
vrtm~4 ready, ie upstream patch set 6 with unit tests just disabled.

== reproducing the original bug / test case==
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/Qt#Testing_networking_code_in_Qt_Base
updated with best information so far, but feel free to update with more
accurate test case for example.

om26er/rvr are now reporting not able to reproduce the original issue on
image #161 (krillin) anymore. Although it's sometimes hard to test
because the test case is not crystal clear either. Suspicion that this
network-manager landing might have fixed the symptom:
https://lists.canonical.com/archives/rtm-14.09-changes/2014-November/000814.html

== this bug's description ==
This bug describes the symptom, but it would be nice to have more accurate
description of the problem being solved with the fixed network manager Qt code.

== unit tests ==
Regarding unit tests, likewise because network-manager isn't installed on the
builders also the following test fails (tested by skipping over the previous
comparison one):
QDEBUG : tst_QNetworkConfigurationManager::allConfigurations() All
configurations: 0
FAIL!  : tst_QNetworkConfigurationManager::allConfigurations() 'all' returned
FALSE. ()

Another test build with network-manager in build dependencies (so that
it's installed during building) shows that it alone does not make the
unit tests pass: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/190552078

2014-11-17 Thread kevin gunn
@failling unit tests - per lorn on irc,
tests are written in that they assume the generic plugin is loaded
those are never going to pass since they need a valid configuration based on
the generic plugin
FAIL!  : tst_QNetworkConfiguration::comparison() 'configs.count()' returned
FALSE. ()
but our patch set explicitly blocks the generic plugin if the networkmanager
plugin is found
so it may be safe to selectively disable tests depending on a valid config.

2014-11-16 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I can confirm that the Saturday build with Lorn's newest patch, version
ubuntu10~utopic1~test14, has the 3G connection staying alive.

Unit tests in qtbase however started failing so the build was done with
temporarily disabling those. My next build will be with the patch
version 4 from upstream, and will be versioned ubuntu10~vrtm~1. If unit
tests still fail, I will build a ~vrtm~2 with the latest patch (some
found issues fixed) but unit tests still disabled so that it can still
be tested.

2014-11-14 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Sounds good!

For some reason, with that patch an unrelated unit test starts failing on both
i386 and amd64 (armhf still building):
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-rtm/landing-022/+sourcepub/4570340/+listing-archive-extra

QFATAL : tst_QXmlStream::crashInUTF16Codec() Received signal 11
FAIL!  : tst_QXmlStream::crashInUTF16Codec() Received a fatal error.

The delta between the previous build and this is:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/190339928/qtbase-opensource-src_5.3.0%2Bdfsg-2ubuntu10~utopic1~test8_5.3.0%2Bdfsg-2ubuntu10~utopic1~test9.diff.gz

It's especially weird since the rtm-14.09 should not have much any other
changes to cause such thing.

I'll try a few more builds to try to understand where the problem is
coming from, even though it will be slow.

2014-11-14 Thread Timo Jyrinki
So a few builds later:

Without the patch, success:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-rtm/landing-022/+build/6569022/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-rtm-14.09-amd64.qtbase-opensource-src_5.3.0%2Bdfsg-2ubuntu10%7Eutopic1%7Etest10_UPLOADING.txt.gz

With the patch again, fail:
https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-rtm/landing-022/+build/6569183/+files/buildlog_ubuntu-rtm-14.09-amd64.qtbase-opensource-src_5.3.0%2Bdfsg-2ubuntu10%7Eutopic1%7Etest11_FAILEDTOBUILD.txt.gz

Any ideas what could cause the unit test to reliably fail with the patch
added, given that the patch only touches bearer code and the failure is
in tst_QXmlStream?

There is the option to start disabling additional unit tests, but QA
probably would not accept that without understanding the cause for
failure.

I have monitored calls to ofono DBus connection manager interfaces
following comment #7 in

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-ofono/+bug/1226739

The command was:

# dbus-monitor --system interface=org.ofono.ConnectionManager
interface=org.ofono.ConnectionContext

I have attached the output. What I see is that a process with unique
name :1.8 is activating/deactivating periodically the cellular data
context.

# dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.DBus
/org/freedesktop/DBus org.freedesktop.DBus.GetConnectionUnixProcessID
string::1.8

showed the PID of NetworkManager.

The output of /usr/share/ofono/scripts/monitor-ofono is:

...
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = {}
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Active = False
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = { Interface = ccmni0, Gateway

255.255.255.0, Method = static, Address = 10.79.188.18 }
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Active = True
{ConnectionContext} [/ril_0/context1] Settings = {}

255.255.255.0, Method = static, Address = 10.143.31.135 }

ofono is just told to activate/deactivate the context, no spurious
disconnections happen.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-13 Thread Lorn Potter
Ok, I think I see the light now. This is an odd one.

There seems to be two connection settings (within networkmanager) for
the same connection context (even in mako), one being the nm settings
configuration that is actually connected (settings/2), and the other
that is not flagged as active (settings/0) (both with different UUID).
It is this non-active configuration that SmartScopes is holding on to
and trying to connect to, which then causes nm to disconnect the other
configuration.

I can work around this by faking that the Settings/0 is flagged as
Active in QtBearer when there is a connection context somewhere with the
same context id that is actually active.

.cache/unity8-dash should be enough to remove, after which one can go to
Video scope and pull down to refresh to test whether download works.

My mako PIN dialog problem is bug #1376250 (happens on mako only) and
can be workarounded via system settings - security. The wifi being
simply powered on is not the key - if not connected to a wifi network,
3G keeps reconnecting. The only way for a stable 3G connection with the
PPA is to have wifi connecting to a network on boot, after which the
wifi can be disabled to use 3G only with the original bug fixed.

Driver being the problem was suggested, but since this happens on both
mako and krillin it's not likely.

icons/images do not show up like normal if I start up with 3g

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-11 Thread Timo Jyrinki
@Lorn: Did you have wifi turned on with a known network when you booted?

I've seen the same that Pat saw: if you boot with wifi on, then turn
wifi off, 3G stays on and doesn't have the reconnect cycle. However, if
you boot so that wifi was disabled before starting the reboot, the 3G
keeps reconnecting even if you enable wifi, disable it again etc.

It becomes even more complicated (at least for me) if you try forgetting
the known wifi networks (via wifi settings). My idea was to start with
wifi powered on but no known network, to test how's the 3G in that case.
I thought it was my mako or SIM card acting up earlier, but I've now
noticed the pattern that I lose the SIM PIN dialog if I forget the old
wifi networks, which means I can't test this case since I don't get GSM
functionality. Does it work on krillin, forget the wifi networks and
reboot?

Yesterday I asked Antti (Wellark) to try to decipher what's happening,
but I didn't hear from him yet whether he got results. He was working on
dbus listening / log parsing to try to find out what's calling the
reconnects.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-10 Thread Timo Jyrinki
Adding more eyes for network manager (cyphermox) and ofono (abeato).
Could you try to reproduce the problem and try to see what's going in
oFono / Network Manager when the disconnect/reconnect cycle happens, and
whether there's something that could be fixed?

To recap, if you use 3G only, images don't load in eg Video scope. If
you add the rtm-022 PPA to your device and upgrade from there, images
start to load but the 3G connection goes down and up all the time. The
PPA includes an improved network-manager bearer backend for Qt to fix
several issues like the problem related to scopes.

To add the PPA, you can use among else the 'citrain' tool from phablet-
tools-citrain package. First flash the device, set pin code to ,
enable developer mode, and run:

 citrain device-upgrade 22 ubuntu-rtm

(as a data point, I tried a build without the last three patches and the
behavior is the same. It's now just easier to see as scopes/Unity8 don't
crash anymore)

I test simply by putting 'ping 8.8.8.8' in one adb shell terminal. The
cycle seems constant 20 seconds up, 9 seconds down. When it's down,
ifconfig tells me rmnet_usb0 is not there anymore.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-10 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
How come do we not see this when the updated QtBearer plugin isn't
installed?

What this tells me is something is asking NM to activate a connection
when it already is; so rather than looking at NetworkManager, I'd look
at whatever is activating connections. indicator-network/connectivity-
api maybe? or the APN editor?

Nov 7 16:39:07 ubuntu-phablet NetworkManager[1333]: info (/ril_0):
disconnecting for new activation request.
Nov 7 16:39:07 ubuntu-phablet NetworkManager[1333]: info (/ril_0): device

Nov 7 16:39:07 ubuntu-phablet NetworkManager[1333]: info (/ril_0):
deactivating device (reason 'none') [0]

^ This isn't done by NetworkManager. It seems to be consistently
happening after 20-25 seconds of being connected.

Please try to increasing the logging in NetworkManager (add --log-
level=debug to the exec line /etc/init/network-manager.conf), and attach
syslog again, maybe there is something to be found out from there.

@mathieu-tl Because previously, the QtBearer backend that uses
NetworkManager was not functioning, and the generic plugin was in
control, which only works on device nodes, and has very limited
functionality. It is now more visible because I have fixed the
NetworkManager backend in QtBearer

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-10 Thread Lorn Potter
@kgunn72 I think we certainly have moved on to a different bug.
Originally, QNAM was not considering mobile data connection at all,
because the QtBearer was only using generic plug (which does not know
the difference between mobile data and other network interfaces and is
not really usable anyway). The NetworkManager backend was also not
working as it should.

@mathieu-tl I just noticed in comment #10, you mention roaming (as does
the bug subject). Roaming in QConfiguration means 'connection migration'
where connections are migrated seamlessly to and from wlan/mobile (kind
of like what mobile does moving from tower to tower), i.e. a streaming
media would continue uninterrupted moving from wlan to mobile data. I
believe it has been supported only on Symbian which did the connection
migrations at the platform level .

QNAM should now at least switch the configuration it uses when the
default route changes to one that is usable, which is about the closest
we can get to connection 'roaming' at this point. Previously a client
would have to tear down and create a new QNAM. Now, a QNAM get request
should succeed regardless when the QNAM was made.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-09 Thread Lorn Potter
Attached ofonod log when this happens, from just before disconnect through the
reconnect.

I think the new bearer backend is exposing a bug elsewhere, as this
happens even when there no QNetworkSession opened (which calls to
activate whatever configuration).

Whether it is in NetworkManager, ofonod, rild, or even elsewhere will
take more digging and perhaps other eyes.

_something_ is trying to activate the 3g context (not QtBearer), even if
it is already activated (or appears to be from nm) which causes ofonod
to deactivate it, which then gets re-activated by the autoconnect.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
@kgunn: we have not yet landed anything to the archives since Lorn's
patches are in the upstream 5.4 git, so yes it's still critical.

Test results with the 5.3 ubuntu-rtm/landing-022 PPA (backported patches from
Lorn's commits) would be welcome by anyone capable of testing it. I've added
three more Lorn's patches today and the build has finished:
  * debian/patches/Make-QtBearer-networkmanager-backend-respond-to-wire.patch
  * debian/patches/Support-dual-sim-in-QtBearer-s-networkmanager-backen.patch
  * debian/patches/make-qtbearer-networkmanager-defaultConfiguration-mo.patch

Anything that improves the situation and does not regress would be
welcome to be landed to the archives early next week. I've found it a
bit hard to test the scopes so that results would be consistent
(before/after) and without Unity 8 crashes, but there are recent
improvements to the crash situation now on the latest image.

Saviq now mentioned that rm -rf ~/.cache/unity8-dash in-between would
be a good idea, to remove cached images and such.

My suggestion of testing:
1. 3G only, wifi disabled
2. 3G only, wifi enabled but no known access points
3. compare to wifi enabled and connected

I've tested the 1. in a way that I --bootstrap flash the device, and
then without ever connecting to wifi, connect to 3G network and upgrade
to the PPA over 3G. This is a potential real situation worth simulating.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread Timo Jyrinki
As an addition, I have only mako so anyone with krillin would be very
welcome to test.

I have multiple problems on mako regarding testing the PPA: 1. Often no
SIM dialog on boot, 2. With today's image, even after I get registered
to 3G network, the data connection seems to disconnect and reconnect for
10s at a time. This is however _after_ adding the PPA, so it might be
because of the latest patches in case Qt can affect such a thing.

With the today's image and PPA build on mako I can confirm that when the
data is up, it can load video thumbnails even after rm -rf:ing the
.cache/unity8-dash/*. Music scope seems less error resilient in general.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread kevin gunn
mzanetti was able to test ppa with krillin

from irc: ppa is good. can't repro the issue any more. both recover fine, dash
and my app which used to hit this issue.
everything else seems to behave the same still.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread Pat McGowan
Running the PPA here on a krillin as well

Here are the tests I did before refreshing all the scopes:
Wifi and 3g on - turn off wifi
all data off - turn on 3g after wiping the unity8 cache

The video scope is not getting remote content for me at all on 3g whereas wifi
gets it immediately.
I am not getting remote grooveshark images in music scope even when on wifi.
The other scoeps got all their content

3g on, wipe the cache and reboot
I started getting very inconsistent results where some scopes would work others
would not.
I started to see what Timo described where 3g data connection would come and
go, thats definitely a regression in the PPA
Oddly the today home scope was also not getting any content at all even thought
it has local content

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread Omer Akram
I tested the silo 22 on krillin 151 and it breaks my 3G internet. The
connection intermittently drops and then restores itself in a few
seconds. This keeps on happening forever.

Are there any logs that you want me to provide ?

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-07 Thread Lorn Potter
This is really odd.
Digging into this, it appears that something in the system other than QtBearer
backend is causing this.

Attached is a dbus-monitor log. The connection never gets fully activated,
which goes along with the log:
Nov 7 16:45:37 ubuntu-phablet NetworkManager[1333]: warn DNS: plugin dnsmasq
update failed
Nov 7 16:45:37 ubuntu-phablet NetworkManager[1333]: info Removing DNS
information from /sbin/resolvconf

There is nothing in the backend that activates or deactivates the
connection by itself. Although if I remove the plugin, the connection
stabilizes. This makes be believe that there is something else behaving
badly since this plugin is now working more like it should (it works
fine and passes Qt's auto tests on desktop with wifi and cable ethernet)

Since I am not totally sure either way about this, I will continue to
look at this plugin.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-05 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I'm getting for example empty music lens with the ~test5 packages. Next
up I'm simply trying getting the networkmanager bearer directory from
5.4 git with cherrypicked property cache patch, and use that on top of
5.3.0. There does not seem to be anything preventing that looking at the
git logs, and if it just builds it should be a saner way to match all
the recent changes. I'll keep also the generic plugin disabling patch,
the Reset QNAM patch and the linux_common ofono move related changes.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-05 Thread Lorn Potter
The public API between 5.3 and 5.4 has not changed, so using the 5.4 backend
code in 5.3 will work. It's how I am testing/developing it.
Sorry if this is a mess, the nm backend code was basically never totally
finished and untouched for a long time, except for the port to qt5 (which I had
nothing to do with), which broke more of it.

There are still a few bugs left, but at least it's not totally broken
now.

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-05 Thread Timo Jyrinki
The 5.3.0+dfsg-2ubuntu10~utopic1~test7 in the PPA is with the
networkmanager backend from 5.4 and the other patches. I'm not able to
see music and video scopes contents with that on a freshly flashed
(--bootstrap flash) mako that has never connected to wifi (PPA upgrade
downloaded over 3G). Note that at this point wifi is enabled but it's
not connected to any AP. After connecting wifi I can refresh to see
content in the video and youtube scopes (although music stays empty).

Rebooting, then disabling wifi did load content over 3G for the music
scope too (others were probably cached), which I think is the first
time. I can also browse the 7digital catalog and it loads the images
(grooveshark images are broken regardless of Qt). This seems fairly hard
to reproduce, since there are currently also Unity 8 crashers on the
image

I think better test cases than scopes do not load would be useful,
scopes adds too big layer of other potential problems. Any ideas?

[Bug 1357321] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] QNetworkAccessManager doesn't support roaming on Ubuntu

2014-11-04 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I succeeded in rebasing the patch for 5.3.0, although with some level of
uncertainty when doing that for example with
QNetworkManagerEngine::deviceConnectionsChanged not existing in 5.3.0.
It applies now and seems to build also successfully, although as of now
the armhf build is still ongoing (at https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-
ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu-rtm/landing-022).

When armhf has finished, it'd be worth testing. lp:~kubuntu-packagers
/kubuntu-packaging/qtbase-opensource-src_530_networkmanagerfixes is
updated with the rebase.

To replicate my rebasing environment see
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/8819119/. I originally did quilt push -f on
the last patch and then manually fixed the codebase until I had gone
through all the rejected parts.
