I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 and I'm also affected by this bug. I'm using the
theme Radiance and everything else is @ the default settings.

It seems like something is using the same Qt event ID ranges as VLC
itself. I can't reproduce the problem, and I can only guess that it is
caused by some Qt plugin or theme on the user's system.
