open Language Support, change the "keyboard input method system" to
"none", and relogin.

GTK_IM_MODULE is "xim" on my system. I don't know where this default
comes from, though.

@Torsten: Do you remember which value GTK_IM_MODULE had before you unset
it?
I'm asking because if the value was "xim", and if that caused the
problem, it was a leftover from previous releases. On a fresh install of
Lubuntu 16.10, and due to the fix of bug #1605408, the GTK_IM_MODULE
value default
This still is a problem on Lubuntu 16.10, and "unset GTK_IM_MODULE" is
still a workaround.

I have ``ibus-gtk``, and Ubuntu 15.04, inkscape 0.91.0+47~ubuntu14, but
I was hit by the same issue.
The value of GTK_IM_MODULE is ``xim``. Had to launch inkscape with:
"unset GTK_IM_MODULE && inkscape" to use it properly.
This bug is extremely old and even if it seems related to other packages
@Nobuto: It seems like you were spot on with suggesting that ibus-gtk
is/was missing. In that case this bug is fixed in Unity in 15.04 (bug
#1377370), but not in the flavours.
So probably ibus-gtk should be added to the seed in kubuntu-meta,
lubuntu-meta, etc. Maybe those should be affected packag
i can confirm too, installing ibus-gtk on 14.10 appears to work

I can confirm this bug on Lubuntu 14.10 as well as on Ubuntu 14.10
Additionally, I think (but I'm not sure how to prove it) evince suffers
from the same bug. It freezes if I want to fill forms in PDF documents.
Starting evince with 'unset GTK_IM_MODULE evince' again works as a
workaround.

Probably related to this bug: Sometimes before the lockup, the keyboard
input lags severely. In particular, I suddenly have to press each key
twice to get the letter entered in inkscape. Sometimes it needs even
more key presses of the same key before it is accepted by inkscape.
Shortly after that,
Unity can't be the problem. I'm experiencing the same lockup when editing text,
but I'm on kubuntu 14.10 running the plasma desktop (kwin as window manager).
There's no output to the console, btw.
