I agree with Robie that this work would best be done upstream. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Importance -> Medium as there is a workaround available. Without further research I can't confirm that this is definitely the right thing to do by default for all users. Unfortunately this is a change that can't be unwound easily, so I'd really prefer to see the bug resolved in Debian first unless it can be confirmed for certain that this is the right thing to do in Ubuntu.
