The bug was caused by a default pixel depth that was too low. The default is now 16-bit. An upstream 2.7.7.6 has been released to reflect this. I have uploaded it to my PPA and received confirmation that it was accepted, except that the package has yet to be built by the archive, for some reason.

As previously reported, DDC works as expected when booting the X server and AMD driver available in my PPA on hardware booting from a hard-disk. However, one thing I forgot to point out is that I get really psychedelic colors, presumably because the maximum color depth is not correctly detected.
