I think the proposed 3.13.0-44 kernel made the call traces go away, but
the package didn't build out the dkms correctly, so my nvidia modules do
not get loaded.

Gábor, you need to explicitly install the proposed package : sudo apt-
get install linux-image-generic/proposed. In my case it installs
3.13.0-44-generic.
