Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.19 kernel[0]. To add to this request, I set up another wireless card as an AP, and iwlwifi was able to connect to it, so I think the bug is between iwlwifi on client side, and rtl8192cu on the hostapd side. (Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0bda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
