I just ran into this issue yesterday with a fresh install of Xubuntu
14.04.4 on a machine with nVidia 650m video. I can blindly type in
password and then get to lightdm session when in nVidia mode. Switching
to Intel mode the login works as it should. I'm able to run this way for

This still happens on 15.04. I have a ThinkPad E540 with Optimus
graphics. Plugging in a HDMI display causes display to go blank.
I found this blog posting which explains that the issue is related to
gpu-manager not working correctly:
This is really a bug in the intel driver, which usually works well with
the nvidia driver. Also, to disable gpu-manager, there's no need to
touch the upstart job (/etc/init/gpu-manager.conf), all you have to do
is boot with the nogpumanager kernel parameter.
