[Bug 144355] Re: Incorrect Math in version 5.9.14

2007-09-26 Thread Sebastien Bacher
No you didn't explain how you get 1278.4 which is the right result
according to you. You also didn't reply to the comments to tell me what
was wrong with the 1360 - 6% = 1360 - 0.06 = 1359.94 logic. Anyway
since you seem to have no interest to reply to comment in a constructive
way closing the bug

[Bug 144355] Re: Incorrect Math in version 5.9.14

2007-09-26 Thread Parthan
I think the behavior of taking 6% as 6/100 is correct to keep things
simple, when you do not give a % of something, it is interpreted as % of
1. This is the reason for 1360 - 6% giving the answer of 1359.94. The
argument can be that the calculator must apply the % of the number
before it, i.e. 1360.

But this can become a bit tricky when it is a part of a complex
calculation like 150 + 240 - 10% + 300 - 10%. So, as per the bug the
expected behavior is..

150 + 240 + 10% of (150 + 240) + 300 - 10% of (150 + 240 + 10% of (150 +
240) + 300).

This shows that how tricky it might become that the calculator needs to
be extra intelligent. Presuming it to be a simple calculator providing
basic mathematical functions, interpretation of 6% as 6/100 = .06 is not
a bug.

2007-09-25 Thread Rob Douglas
6% of the number infront of it.. you know, like other calculators do..
tell you what, give me your address, i'll mail you $2, you can goto the dollar
tree, get a calculator, and try for yourself.. this is a valid complaint from
an end user thats wasting time submitting this bug and arguing with a righteous
ass who assumes hes smarter then 90% of the world.. sebastien, just use common
sense on how people use the calculator program, instead of debating it with
me.. i've explained it 3 other times..

[Bug 144355] Re: Incorrect Math in version 5.9.14

2007-09-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
the blog entry is about the order of the actions which is something
else. Could you explain what is wrong with the 1360 - 6% = 1360 - 0.06
= 1359.94 for people who do know how maths work but don't know about
the windows calculator?

could you explain what you expect 6% to mean if that's not 0.06 rather
bouncing to trying other softwares?

2007-09-24 Thread Jérôme Guelfucci
I think this is a correct behaviour : 6% means 6/100; if you want to
have 6% of 1360 you should use 6% * 1360.

Thank you for your bug, that's not one though. 1360 - 6% = 1360 - 0.06
= 1359.94, which is correct

[Bug 144355] Re: Incorrect Math in version 5.9.14

2007-09-24 Thread Rob Douglas
sorry, i have to dispute the way it works.. ubuntu is trying very hard
to win over windows converts.. many of whom (myself included) use calc
for alot of things.. this *to me* is a bug.. some others agree (dating
back to 2004) http://blogs.sun.com/calum/entry/gcalctool_ng

also, pick up ANY hardware calculator.. and key in 1360-6% , and you
will see that this is functionally incorrect how gcalctool is handling
it..

[Bug 144355] Re: Incorrect Math in version 5.9.14

2007-09-23 Thread Ming Hua
Apparently, gcalcool is interpreting 6% as 0.06, not as 6% of 1360.

Whether it's a bug or expected behavior is open to debate. Meanwhile
you can always use 1360 * (1 - 6%) to work around this.
