Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. 15.04 reached EOL on February 4, 
2016.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: 
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases 

As it appears this issue was resolved in a future version of the
package, which is released for newer versions of Ubuntu, and that the
Ubuntu version this bug affects is now EOL, I'm going to mark this issue
as Incomplete.

While this works as a workaround, it isn't a solution, since any new
installation would face the same problem.

A proper solution is to fix the current package or update it to a newer
calibre version (like backporting the package from 15.10), but apparently
nobody cares about bugs in non-lts Ubuntu releases.

A temporary solution here is to uninstall the Ubuntu package and use the
binary provided by the developer: this allowed me to import the EPUBs
correctly. https://bugs.launchpad.net/calibre/+bug/1493627

My error output is the same as others with the ubuntu package on Ubuntu
GNOME 15.04.

I also have this issue running calibre 2.20 with Kubuntu 15.04. It is
able to add some ebooks but has failed with an epub I created with
sigil. The epub was validated and was able to be opened with calibre's
ebook-viewer program.
