Public bug reported:

The arduino version shipped with Ubuntu Wily should be a current build, such as 
1.6.3.
In fact, it is version 1.0.5, which is 2.5 years old, and incompatible with 
most current boards.

This is made more confusing by a version number that doesn't make it obvious. 
Going to  
Help-menu -> About Arduino, should show the numbering that corresponds to the 
source upstream. 

However, what I actually see is the dpkg version, "2:1.0.5 + dfsg2-4". 
This doesn't help the user easily understand "Are you running a recent build, 
at least version 1.5?"
