I have almost the same situation except that I have two independent screens. And I've got the same error message. The resolution of one of them (default screen) is 1280x800, another is 1024x768. I also have to use i810, because new intel driver crashes with current configuration. I'll attach my

Guys, looks like the problem isn' t all about the 2048 limitation. I moved the screen up, so I get a 1440x1924 reslution. And I have this error : [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo compiz Checking for Xgl: not present. Detected PCI ID for VGA: 00:02.0 0300: 8086:27a2 (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Checking

AFAIK there is a restriction in the driver, that the virtual desktop may not exceed 2048x2048, otherwise dri will be disabled. Maybe that's your problem. -- Visual Effects can't be enabled when using dual monitors https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150838 You received this bug notification because

Gert is mostly right. It is in fact a hardware restriction. GL contexts can't exceed a fairly small resolution (eg. 2048x2048) on some Intel chipsets. We can't do anything to work around that. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Won't Fix -- Visual Effects can't be enabled when using

Oh no!! I was so exited about having dual heads for the first time!! ;.-( I searched the internet, but I coudn't find clear and reliable information about this 2048 limitation. Is it a hardware limitation, or the issue might be worked out sometime ? Please let me know, I like 3d effects too much

Also, there's one more thing ... A more friendly message could be shown instead of Desktop effects could not be enabled. Maybe you could return another paragraph explaining why it could not be anabled, like Using your Video Card, Visual Effects only work with resolutions up to 2048x2048. --

Just one more comment - What if I use two different desktops, one for each screen, instead of the extended desktop ? Looks like a guy managed to run beryl with those settings ... (I'm just so knocked out by this limitation - I don't wanna be left out of the 3d desktop world ...) -- Visual
