[Bug 1531824] Re: Xorg freeze
Tested the daily ISO: xenial-desktop-amd64.iso Mon, 25 Jan 2016 07:58:31 GMT SHA256SUM: c6dcbd93724704d217e08a75167f0c2188e2847507b782e9127adba017b3fca2 This booted from the DVD but there was widespread video corruption. The shadows on windows had a scan-line effect, although it was more than one pixel per line. Most text was heavily corrupted beyond being able to guess what the words were but sometimes righted themselves on hover. So I guess the boot issue is fixed but it has its own problems. Should I raise another bug report for this? Back to the issue at hand: 3.18.0-031800-generic has worked flawlessly for days now without freezing, so there's a fix for this issue between somewhere 3.16 and 3.18, unfortunately 3.17 has some major video corruption so I'm not sure how to proceed. Quick update: It's taking a couple of days or more to test properly, so testing the live CD for this issue wont be practical, however, it looks like it isn't necessary. 3.18.0-031800-generic (from v3.18-vivid) appears not to have the problem... v3.16.0-57 INTERMITTENT VIDEO FREEZE ON RESUME v3.16.0-59 INTERMITTENT VIDEO FREEZE ON RESUME v3.17-utopic WIDESPREAD VIDEO CORRUPTION v3.18-vividWORKED PERFECTLY FOR DAYS I guess there are a lot of versions between 3.16.0 and 3.18 so please advise, I'll continue to try to pin it down, but if that's enough to find what's needed let me know. I'll still download and test the live CD for the video being in standby from boot when I get a chance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531824 Title: Xorg freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1531824/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1531824] Re: Xorg freeze
Cheers. Will do. It might take a while. I'm still testing 3.16.0-59 for another day or two just to be sure. Do you have any suggestions for forcing this sort of bug to surface on- demand? It would really help speed things up as I'm having to run the machine for a couple of days to be sure at the moment. [Bug 1531824] Re: Xorg freeze
To see if what's resolved? The boot failure or this freeze issue? FYI - 3.17 has display corruption (large parts of the screen don't get painted), and my test method wasn't reliable, it's going to take ages trying to bisect the version to find a potentially fixed one as it looks like I need the machine to be running for a day or so to be certain of anything. Currently on 3.16.0-59 (was 57 when I reported it), so I'll see how this goes.

Okay, v4.3-wily boots and does not exhibit the original bug. Same for v4.1-wily. Looks like there's another bug here with v4.4-wily as I mentioned, not sure if another bug should be raised for that? I also think I have a test that I can perform to reproduce the fault on- demand - just keep suspending and resuming a few times and the screen soon locks up. This didn't happen with v4.1 or v4.3. If this holds true it might be practical to bisect, otherwise probably not. I was going to bisect the kernel archives to find where the problem started, but I figure I should check with you first. Please advise. Kernel 4.4.0 is unusable, screen immediately enters power-save and stays that way. After GRUB (or if GRUB is not interrupted) the screen goes into power- save mode and stays that way. I can type my full-disk decryption password in and after a some disc activity I hear the "login sound", but the screen remains in power-save mode and doesn't come out of it with mouse or keyboard movement. linux-headers-4.4.0-040400_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_all.deb linux-headers-4.4.0-040400-generic_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_amd64.deb linux-image-4.4.0-040400-generic_4.4.0-040400.201601101930_amd64.deb Will try another.
Phill, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. At your earliest convenience, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. If testing on your main install would be inconvenient, one may: 1) Install Ubuntu to a different partition and then test this there. 2) Backup, or clone the primary install. If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Where X, and Y are the first two numbers of the kernel version, and Z is the release candidate number if it exists. If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream. Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: latest-bios-0405 ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531824 Title: Xorg freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1531824/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
