Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (with 3.19-62) on VMware ESXi 6.0 is effected too.
Reverted to older version was the workaround to getting a "working" Ubuntu
again.

I have the same problem on Vmware Player 12 and Vmware Workstation 11.
Fresh install of Ubuntu 15.10 downloaded yesterday, first pack of
updates(suggested from update manager) and then with first reboot it fails to
load, showing only the white cursor.
