I had this problem earlier. Update-manger was hung on ldconfig.real. It turns out one of libraries was screwed up due to some filesystem inconsistencies. Once I fixed those problems and reinstalled the affected packages, the problem went away. You might try doing an `lsof -p` on the ldconfig.real
