i can confirm this bug appears in karmic beta
inhibit power management daemon during playback is checked in Tools -
Preferences - Show settings (All) - Advanced settings
$ vlc --version
VLC media player
Previous version (jaunty) worked fine, now with karmic koala alpha 3
this ploblem has appeared.

vlc player can't control power-managment setting. if you wan't to use
vlc player you need to set it up in System Settings Powemanager ( or
some thing like this , i don't use english version )
