Indeed I added something to the ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf:
default-preference-list SHA512 SHA384 SHA256 SHA224 AES256 AES192 AES CAST5
BZIP2 ZLIB ZIP Uncompressed
digest-algo sha256
cert-digest-algo SHA256
It was some time ago so I don't remember which of the three lines where
the right config item(s).
