I was wrong and Thunderbird 45 now follows the GTK3 theme. You can test it by switching to Breeze-Dark. The icons change to white on black. Oh well, we'll have to wait until the next designer wave comes and the theme changes again. I can confirm this bug. Suddenly today the icons are uggly grey. In addon manager the default theme was off. But reanabling does not change it back to colour theme it was before. However, the work-around given in bug #1004841 doesn't work anymore.
